Hair Myths Debunked

Various hair products (curling wand, bobby pins, and brush) are sitting on a desk with a mirror and plant on it.

You’ve probably heard so many hair myths you’re probably confused. Hair myths have been around for so long that we’ve accepted them as a fact. But, trust me when I say, there is so much fake news out there when it comes to determining how you should care for your hair. I’m going to go over a few common ones and debunk them for you!

1. You should skip conditioner if your hair gets oily super fast

Greasy/oily hair is not caused by conditioning your hair. Instead, it’s brought on when too much sebum (oil) is produced by the scalp tissues, causing buildup. After shampoo, applying conditioner to your ends is a must. Conditioner is not only okay for oily hair types to use but also necessary, as it helps provide a healthy dose of hydration, nourishment, and protection that it otherwise wouldn’t get. If you just use shampoo, it will dry your hair out. The key is to find a conditioner that works for your individual hair needs.

2. The more conditioner you apply.. the better

Okay this will make your hair more oily and will just weigh your hair down. A quick tip to try to use less is to brush your hair before you get into the shower, be gentle when washing your hair, and you won’t need a ton of conditioner to detangle your hair!

3. Your hair needs frequent trims (once a month) in order to grow

I wrote a blog post about this here.  Yes, you should be trimming your hair, but I say every 3-6 months or at most every 12 weeks. You need to keep your hair healthy at the ends so they do not break off but you don’t need to trim your hair once a month.

4. Come in with dirty hair for your updo

Oh my, I have said this over and over again this is sooooo not true. I have mentioned this multiple times so I hate to sound like a broken record but it’s true. Read more about this subject here and to find out why this is one of my biggest pet peeves.

Summary

There are so many hair myths out there that it’s difficult to distinguish the truth from the myths!  These are some of the most popular myths you might have believed, but they are not true. Everyone should be using conditioner on the very ends of their hair, no matter the hair type. If you use it on the ends and don’t overdo it, it won’t make your hair more oily. You can grow your hair out even if you don’t trim it super often, but you should trim every few months for healthy growth. I have said this quite a few times before, but your hair needs to be CLEAN for your hair appointments. I hope debunking these myths helps you to have healthier hair!

Katlyn
