Why I Stopped Using Lush Skincare

This isn’t my photograph

Oh to be in high school again where my skin was pretty decent and I could do whatever I wanted and I would rarely get a breakout. Long gone are those days. I feel like if I eat a chocolate bar I’ll wake up with 5 pimples in the morning. It’s just how skin is. Some people get acne when they are teens, while some, like me, get it when they are adults. Now I will say that I do have pretty good skin. I don’t get oily and I don’t get dry and I rarely have breakouts because of my intense skin care routine (to read about it, click here). But I remember the days when everyone and their mother was obsessed with Lush. I was too!! Until I did some research and I talked to my esthetician and truly looked at their ingredients. I’m going to walk through the pros and cons of Lush Skincare to help you be more educated on what they have to offer.

Pros:

Fun and cute product names and packaging

Green initiatives reducing plastic waste and water

Ethical sourcing of ingredients

Charitable

Cruelty-free

Cons:

Most of their formulas contain high amounts of synthetic fragrance and dyes. Sure, humans like things that smell good and look pretty. But both of these ingredients do not serve any beneficial purpose whatsoever in skincare products. In fact, synthetic fragrance is a commonly known irritant to the skin. Also, they casually list this ingredient as a “safe synthetic” on their website. While I agree there are plenty of safe synthetic ingredients used in beauty, just because they say it’s “safe” doesn’t mean it’s true or good for the skin. That’s sketchy to me.

In many of their cleansers and exfoliants, they use ingredients like cornmeal, sugar, salt and ground almonds. All of these ingredients are wayyyy too harsh and aggressive for your skin. Yes, these ingredients are natural; no it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s good for your face. Natural doesn’t mean good for your skin!!!!

Side note: Their famous bath bombs….. Yes, they are fun, but who needs all those dyes and fragrance near their lady parts. No thanks.

Summary

Overall, I think Lush has some really positive points that I 100% agree with. It’s easy to get swept away in the marketing. But if you want to get down to the nitty gritty of the actual product ingredients and formulations, I think their products contain way too many irritants and I don’t consider them skin-friendly. This is not to bash on Lush and this is in no way to say never go to Lush anymore. I just wanted you to be aware of what they have in their products and that I am not a fan for those reasons.

xoxo,
Katlyn
