Winter is officially here, and with it comes the cold weather. Have you ever noticed that in winter, your scalp becomes dry and itchy?? Well, your scalp is skin after all, so if your hands are dry and itchy from the cold, your scalp may be too. Thankfully, there are a few ways to combat the effects of cold weather on your scalp!!
Why Do I have a Dry Scalp in Winter?
When your hair is lacking moisture, your scalp becomes dry and itchy. When your hands become dry and itchy, you apply lotion to protect and heal them. However, you can’t cover your hair in body lotion, but I do have a few trips and tricks for you! But first, what is causing the lack of moisture???
A dry scalp can be caused by:
- Cold, dry air
- Washing hair with too-hot water
- Shampooing your hair too often
Now that we know why your scalp may be itchy, let’s talk about how to fix it!
How to Deal with Dry Scalp in Winter
Turn Down the Temperature
Girl, I know those hot showers feel amazing when it’s freezing outside, but unfortunately, they are not great for your skin! You don’t have to take cold showers, but when washing your hair, switching to lukewarm water may make your scalp a little happier!
Try a Hair Mask
Hair conditioning masks, such as Olaplex Mask No. 8, help condition not only your hair but your scalp as well. Using a hair mask on wash days allows the masks to fully penetrate and focus on those areas that need a little extra love!
Adjust How Often You Shampoo
Overwashing your hair can lead to a dry itchy scalp. When you wash your hair, you also wash away the natural oils that help protect your scalp! Try to minimize hair washing to once or twice a week. I know everyone has different hair needs, so you may need to experiment to see what hair schedule works best for you. Dry shampoo can help you last a little in between wash days!
Scalp Scrub
Scalp scrubs and massages also help to increase cell turnover! My go-to scalp scrub is Virtue’s Exfoliating Scalp Scrub. If you suffer from a super dry scalp or have any sort of flakes, use this before you shampoo and really work it in. You can say goodbye to that dry flaky scalp!
