When you go to get your hair done, whether it be for a formal event or new highlights, do you feel under prepared? Do you wish you knew what you are getting into so there are no surprises? I am going to talk about what you can expect and what you can do to prepare for your next hair appointment.
Special Event/Wedding
- There is a common trend that is told everywhere that you must come in with dirty hair. This is false, and it will lead to problems with styling your hair. When the hair is dirty, it is heavier because of the oils, and the stylist has to use more products than normal to get your hair to cooperate. Come into your appointment with clean, dry hair and your stylist will thank you. Trust me.
- Make sure that your inspiration photos are realistic. I hate telling my clients that the photo that they love cannot be achieved. Try to find hairstyles that match the density of your hair and also the length!
- Sometimes your curls won’t last all day if you want those very loose beachy waves. I would recommend getting your curls a little tighter so they will fall over the course of the day to the style that you love.
Salon
- If you’re getting highlights or a balayage, stop the purple shampoo 2 weeks before your appointment date. Hairstylists need to know the true tone of your hair. Also, if you use purple shampoo right before your appointment, the hair would give them a harder time throughout the service.
- The long-term effects of lightening your hair can be unknown given your hair history. But what I have found is that the service will definitely leave your hair more damaged and more knotty than before. Also if you decide you want to go back to the dark hair, the darker color will fade more quickly so you would have to, in turn, color it dark more often to keep it dark.
- Getting your hair colored whether you want highlights or a full color correction may take a little longer than you think. It could be an all day event! Take the day off and be prepared to sit in the chair for quite a few hours and enjoy the service.
Getting your hair done should not be a scary thing. With these few tips you should feel way more comfortable walking into your appointment.

Katlyn
